Poetry is a distillation of thought and action. Murder mysteries are a search for truth and--sometimes--justice. The Monkey's Mask travels erotic yet brutal, dark byways as Australian PI Jill Fitzpatrick pursues answers to a missing teen's death. Each chapter, each scene distilled to its essence in a short poem to thrill in its sexuality or abhor the consequences."Mickey's murder on Page Three
under the big black headlines
the photo taken by her dad
at her eighteenth birthday party
'petite, pretty and only nineteen'
like a line from a sixties song
'sexually assaulted, strangled and dumped.'
Mickey in a police lens
chunks out of her arms and legs
from the pack of dogs that found her
barefoot,
her shirt round her neck
no pants
her face swollen with rot
laid out by her killer
in the fetal position."
Many thrillers and mysteries have claimed to leave you "haunted and gasping." This one will.

I don't know enough about poetry to tell of this is good or bad.
A lesbian "detective" story in poetry. Supposedly erotic (I didn't think so).
Has had great reviews but left me cold. It was obvious almost straight away "whodunit".
Most of the short poems that comprise the story can stand alone. I suppose that means the structure is good?
Clever and beautifully written verse. Cutting descriptions and insights economically written and precisely delivered.A poetic take on the noir novel.
I bought this book after watching a book revue of it on Jennefer Burn's Tuesday Book Club. This book definitely did not do it for me as a matter of fact it was not at all as described. Utterly boring not worth buying.
What a great idea, and so cleverly crafted. Poetry as noir crime! I enjoyed this immensely, both as verse and a crime story. Trigger warning, much gay sex, which is erotic but amusing, and which will not qualify for the bad sex award.
Beautifully imagined and breathtakingly original. Highly recommended
Dorothy Porter's The Monkey's Mask is stunning a novel written entirely in poetry that is almost impossible to put down. Even if you usually run a mile at the sight of poetry, you're likely to find this book irresistable. Dorothy's heroine is a lesbian private detective, who uncovers as much about herself as the mystery as the novel progresses. Set in Sydney and the Blue Mountains, The Monkey's Mask is rich with Australian idioms and imagery. It's also, very simply, a great mystery tale and a great read.
First, a few admissions. I heard about The Monkey's Mask by Dorothy Porter soon after I joined Sisters in Crime. That could be some twelve years ago. I was fascinated at the time. A crime story told in prose and by all accounts, masterfully achieved. I was impressed by the author's talent, for certainly it would take an extraordinary talent to pull this off, but it had been many years since I'd read a book of poetry and so I thought this book 'was not my thing'.
Hmm, embarrassing because when a fellow crime buff recently mentioned The Monkey's Mask, I immediately bought the kindle version...and found I loved it. This is a cross-genre book. It meshes erotic lesbian love and sex with a crime thriller and is narrated entirely in prose. I couldn't put it down. It's so different. It's written with tight language. It's quite fragmented in style. I will re-read it soon to absorb and appreciate the author's craft further.
The premise of the story involves a female PI, Jill, who is investigating the disappearance of a young woman, Mickey. In the course of her inquiries, Jill meets Diana and subsequently has a torrid and tormented affair with the married woman. Meanwhile, Mickey's body is discovered and the thriller takes a darker dive. I don't like spoilers, so won't tell you more. Apart from, this book is great for readers who want something out of the box and writers who think it's all been said and done before.
